At the end of the 19th century, the Sulkava householders established a steam-powered dairy in this house. It was the best dairy in the entire Mikkeli Province, both in terms of production quantity and quality. In a month, the dairy produced around 5,000 kilos of butter.
New purpose
Despite the good quality and quantity of the products, the company did not become very profitable, and already in 1909, the company went bankrupt. After that, the Sulkava parish bought the buildings and completely renovated them. The building was consecrated as a parish hall in 1922, including a worship hall, club rooms, and the apartments of the caretaker and the deaconess.
The building got a new purpose in 1974, when it was renovated into the industrial premises of Nahka Oy Ltd. After that, the building served as Marimekko’s factory and shop premises. Today, the building houses a Marimekko pop-up store in the summer.
